Ableton Live 8 Free

I want to use my guitar to create tracks on the 'Live' Mixing Software.
Currently, I have my guitar plugged into the amp, as I normally would to just play out loud on the amp.
I also have a cord running from the outlet labeled 'USB' on the amp into one of the USB outlets on my computer. However, this doesn't seem to flow through to the LIVE mixing software.
I am new to LIVE software, and I have been able to rig up a USB microphone that does connect to the software, and I have successfully created a vocal track on the software, using the microphone and my stunningly beautiful vocal chords (*sarcasm*). However, I can't seem create a guitar track.
What am I doing wrong? Can anyone please help?
